This is the real world

This summer, Brokers International is bringing the real world to Waukee High School. The two entities have partnered to bring hands-on experience to one Waukee High School senior-to-be who will intern for Brokers International’s information technology department by way of the school’s School-to-Work internship program. This program offers students the opportunity to receive on-the-job experience in a field that interests them while earning college credits from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). The school selects the students based on attendance record, GPA and teacher recommendations. Brokers Internation is headquartered in Urbandale and provides annuity and life insurance solutions to independent insurance professionals across the nation.

New hotel grand opening

West Des Moines will soon have a new hotel. Element is a chain inspired by Westin Hotels & Resorts. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for June 29 to celebrate its grand opening, company officials expect a big turnout for the event.

Studios and one-bedroom suites are styled in the same eco-conscious manner the brand is renowned for with natural light and modern design. The extended-stay experience caters to the traveler who is visiting for a few days or for a few weeks.

The new 110-room hotel is located at Market Street and South Prairie View Drive in the Village of Ponderosa, it is said to be uniquely designed, the next generation in hotel accommodations and the only one of its kind in the state. Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company purchases building to expand distribution

Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company recently announced it will more than quadruple current storage and distribution capacity within the Des Moines Metro area with its purchase of an industrial building south of downtown Des Moines, Iowa. The building will provide the necessary space for the company to meet the needs of its expanded territory as well as the demand for its more than 210 products.

Atlantic has been family-owned and operated for 108 years. Four generations of the Tyler family have built and continue to deliver Coca-Cola and related products to customers throughout its territories.

Fast-casual deli

McAlister’s Deli, a national chain known for its fast-casual brand of food, recently announced it signed a development agreement with its largest franchisee, The Saxton Group, to open five greater Des Moines restaurants. One of these is slated for later this summer in West Des Moines, at the Premier Shoppes next to Five Guys Burgers and Fries at 455 S. 64th St., Suite 100. New chiropractic clinic

The area’s newest chiropractic clinic, Vero Chiropractic, is set to host its ribbon cutting along with an open house on June 29. Vero will be in West Glen Shopping Center. Bamboo Massage & Spa’s grand opening

Bamboo Massage & Spa is a new spa in West Des Moines. It encourages men, women and couples to treat themselves to a quality massage by an international masseuse. The shop lists 60-, 90- and 120-minute full-body massages that range in price from $60 to $120, and 30-60 minute four-hand massages that range from $80 to $120.

Find happiness in strawberry shortcake

Tropical Sno celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 11. The mobile-event trailer is licensed by the state of Iowa to sell frozen treats. The “sno mobile” is generally parked at its Waukee address, but it will travel for events.

Jimmy’s Egg will hatch in June

Jimmy’s Egg has a central Iowa due date coming up later this month. The national chain of restaurants that takes pride in offering breakfast and lunch options in a warm, friendly atmosphere equipped with comfortable booths, tables and patio seating, will soon emerge into West Des Moines. The menu offers cracked-to-order omelets, coffee, fresh-baked breads, burgers, melts, salads and lighter fare as well along with catering options.

Cascades at Jordan Creek, which is a newly built apartment and condo building in West Des Moines, held its grand opening celebration on June 7.
