Plato in West Des Moines

Plato’s Closet has opened a new larger store in West Glen Town Center. The resale shop is geared for teens and young adults and, along with its new sister company, Style Encore, has taken over the lower level of West Glen’s Promenade Building. Style Encore is accepting merchandise now and held its grand opening May 12. Style Encore sells women’s casual and business clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories that are gently used. Plato’s Closet was previously adjacent to the West Glen Super Target. Either shop will offer to buy gently used items and then resell the merchandise. The two stores are located at 5550 Wild Rose Lane. Hours at Plato’s Closet and Style Encore are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Sports Authority

Sports Authority recently announced it’s either closing or selling 140 of its national sporting goods stores. The Colorado-based company made the move as a result of bankruptcy proceedings. The national chain has stores in both West Des Moines and Ames. The location at 4100 University Ave. in West Des Moines, at Water Tower Place, employs about 50 full- and part-time workers. The company couldn’t get its lenders to agree on the terms of a reorganization plan, but a number of competitors could be line to purchase the locations, including Dick’s Sporting Goods. Some analysts predict a sale of the company’s assets will result in the closing of all of its 450 stores.

New containers open in West Des Moines

West Des Moines is set to get Iowa’s first version of The Container Store. The new outlet will sell thousands of variations of items used for storing and organizing your closets, kitchens, bathrooms and just about everything else. It will be located in the vacant space next to The Fresh Market and is expected to be open next fall prior to the holiday shopping season. The store will be located at Mills Crossing on the northeast corner of Mills Civic Parkway and South 60th Street between Jordan Creek Town Center and Interstate 35. Visit www.containerstore.com.

South Creek Crossing gets first tenant

The South Creek Crossing retail building, 5585 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines, will get it first tenant in Get Fit Grill, a restaurant that will offer a variety of foods including prepared meals for takeout. Owners are Joanna Cosner, James Carper and Mick Carper. Get Fit Grill will seat 60 customers, and its menu will include bowls, wraps, chicken, bison, duck, turkey, five-grain rice, vegetables and smoothies. The children’s menu will have chicken quesadillas, sunflower butter and jelly sandwiches and low-sodium turkey dogs. Opening is scheduled for July.

So darn smooth

A Smoothie King is scheduled to open at 5545 Mills Civic Parkway in the West Glen Town Center in West Des Moines. Previously, the space was occupied by Caribou Coffee. The store is expected to open Aug. 10. This will be the first store in Iowa for the New Orleans-based company, which serves 60 varieties of fruit and vegetable-based smoothie drinks. Five Guys is coming soon

West Des Moines will soon have a new hamburger joint. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is bringing their popular brand name, never-frozen, made-to-order burgers, and hand-cut fires to 64th Street and Mills Civic Parkway. The menu has 250,000 ways to customize your burger order. The Virginia-based chain is set to open the new store on Halloween at the retail development of Paradise Pointe. The Shopping center also houses newer venues like Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, Firehouse Subs, Pita Pit, Panda Express and now the 2,400 square foot restaurant at 455 S. 64th St. Five Guys has 1,250 locations nationwide. The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce has moved

The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce has relocated to West Glen Town Center at 650 S. Prairie View Drive, Suite 110. The new space provides more opportunities for the Chamber and its members to interact and serve the community. An official ribbon cutting ceremony was held April 20. Sign language aids interactions at ASI Audiology

ASI has been providing hearing aids and audiological services to Iowans for more than 35 years. The 15th Iowa-based ASI Audiology clinic is now open in West Des Moines. A majority of ASI patients are elderly, or older than the age of 50, which is when hearing loss usually begins. Forever 21 now has a new location in Jordan Creek Town Center. The hip shop celebrated its official grand re-opening event on April 23. The first 300 customers at the opening received a free gift card valued at $10. The store’s expanded space is across from the food court. New store to close only months after opening

The Fresh Market closed all locations in Iowa, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas on May 18. This news includes the location in West Des Moines at 5901 Mills Civic Parkway, which is just west of Jordan Creek Town Center. The store is less than a year old. The decision made to make the company to focus on the remaining stores.

Waukee is a place to grow

Waukee has grown by 30 percent since 2010, according to the city’s fall 2015 special census results recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau. The new population counts show an increase of 4,155 new residents since the 2010 Census, bringing the official population to 17,945. The census in 2005 reported a population of 9,108. n
