Des Moines’ Northwest Suburbs Business Journal has launched two new promotions to recognize the people and companies in the local business communities it serves.
17 in ’17
The first, called “17 in ’17,” will recognize a total of 17 individuals from Urbandale, Johnston and Grimes who have made a positive impact in their business community in 2017. The only requirement is that the individuals must work or live in one of the three cities.
“We all see a number of great people doing a number of great things in our communities,” says Shane Goodman, editor and publisher of the Business Journal. “It’s time that these folks receive the recognition that they deserve, and we are pleased to do that in this publication.”
A committee will review all nominations and select the 17 individuals based on examples of their proven leadership, business successes and community involvement in the past year. Those selected will be recognized in the December issue of the Northwest Suburbs Business Journal. Best of the Northwest for Business
The second promotion, “Best of the Northwest for Business,” is a poll that asks the readers of this publication to vote for their favorite people and businesses in 44 business-related categories.
“We have had tremendous involvement with our ‘Best of Des Moines’ poll in CITYVIEW each year, and we wanted to do a similar promotion with the Business Journal that was specific to business categories and specific to the communities we serve,” says Goodman, who also serves as the president of Big Green Umbrella Media, Inc., which publishes the Business Journals, CITYVIEW, the Iowa Living magazines and other related publications.
“You won’t see a Des Moines business winning a category in this promotion,” he says. “This is all about local business.”
Goodman points out that unlike some other reader polls, the “Best of the Northwest for Business” poll will not be pre-loaded with multiple choice answers.
“Some publishers have damaged the credibility of these types of reader polls by requiring businesses to buy adverting to be on the ballot,” he says. “That’s just wrong, and we refuse to do that.”
Poll questions are all open-ended and require readers to enter the information. Those who are voting can vote in all 44 categories, a handful of them, or just one.
“But there is only one vote per reader,” says Goodman, noting that safeguards are in place to prevent multiple votes or any related cheating.
